Nigerian clubs Akwa United and Nasarawa United produced different outcomes in their CAF Confederation Cup games on Saturday.
Nasarawa United, widely believed to have a slim chance of progressing after managing a 2-1 win over Senegalese second tier outfit Generation Foot, played out a goalless draw in Dakar in the second leg.
Despite having to travel without one of their new signings, Ichull Lordson, owing to late registration, the Solid Miners put up a sturdy show to knock out the Senegalese Cup holders and progress to the first round.
Nasarawa United will face Algerian side CS Constantine in March over two legs.
Akwa United made life difficult for themselves in the reverse fixture against Congolese side Vita Club Mokanda in spite of winning the first leg 1-0 in Pointe-Noire.
Ubong Ekpai, who was the hero in the first leg following his solitary goal, turned out to be the villain on the night.
Just before the break, Ekpai’s poorly taken spot kick was saved by Vita Club Mokanda goalkeeper Ndenoe after Kufre Ebong was fouled in the box.
Nine minutes into the restart, Akwa United were a goal behind. Kalumpubu scored from a goalmouth scramble.
The Congolese held on to their lead till full time, forcing the game into penalties after a 1-1 aggregate.
In the opening five spot kicks, both teams lost a penalty apiece with Abdulafeez failing to score and it meant they went into sudden kick.
Vita Club Mokanda scored their seventh spot kick but Ekpai missed for Akwa United, allowing the Congolese side to progress on a 6-5 penalty win. © supersport.com
