The maiden edition of the Akwa Ibom State Closed Door Squash and Racquet Championship is set to hold at the Uyo Club, from February 27 to 29, 2020.
The three-day event will see over 120 athletes in the state compete in seven categories of U-10, U-15 Boys and Girls, Senior Men and Women, and Veteran Men of over 50 years, respectively. It is scheduled to start from 9am each day.
The tournament, tagged Squash Spectacular 2020, will serve as selection process for athletes that will represent the state at the National Sports Festival in Edo State next month and also at the Youth Games scheduled for later in the year.
The Chairman, Local Organising Committee of the Championship and member, Akwa Ibom State Squash and Racquet Board, Elder Aniefiok Nkom, expressed joy over the hosting of the event while hoping for a younger generation of players to emerge.
“It has been quite hectic putting everything in place for the success of this championship. I am excited that this sport is getting the attention it deserves through this tournament. I want young talents to be discovered and groomed for the future as plans are on ground to make the championship a yearly event though we are still considering twice a year,” he said.
Also speaking, the state’s Squash and Racquet Head Coach Esther Aniefiok Udofia disclosed that attractive cash prizes, trophies and medals will be awarded to winners of each category alongside runners-up and two-third as well.
“This championship is to let the public know that Squash and Racquet sport is alive in the State. We have attractive cash prizes for winners, runners up and two third. We are calling on the general public to come watch the enormous talents we have in the state,” she said.
Squash and Racquet is one of the 27 compulsory sports for future national sports festivals starting with that in Edo this year.
