All is set for the 3rd Edo State Sports Festival kicking off in Benin City, the state capital, tomorrow, Monday, February 10, 2020.
Special Assistant on Sports to the Governor, Mr. Sixtus Omokhagbor, told Daily Sports that all hands are on deck and that adequate preparations have been made to ensure the success of the festival.
He outlined the objectives of the festival to include harnessing new talents, bonding athletes and giving needed exposure to budding stars to ensure a complete medal haul at the Edo 2020 National Sports Festival (NSF) taking place in the state from March 22 to April 2, 2020.
He stated that the one-week Edo State Sports Festival would take place at designated venues for a complete feel by indigenes.
Omokhagbor said: “On Monday, February 10, 2020, we are kicking off with the opening ceremony at the University of Benin Sports Complex by 2pm.
“Thereafter, the Governor, Godwin Obaseki, is going to open the event. We have the University of Benin Sports Complex Ugbowo as one of the venues that would take care of Athletics, Deaf Athletics, Para Athletics, Judo, Wrestling Taekwondo, Handball, Abula, Basketball, Volleyball, Hockey, Football and Swimming.
“The Indoor Sports Hall Etete will take care of Badminton, Gymnastics, Table Tennis, Deaf Table Tennis and Para Table Tennis. We also have the Imaguero Hall at Sapele Road which would handle Ayo, Chess, Scrabble and Darts.
“At Ihogbe College, ICE Road, we will have Beach Volleyball, Dambe and Kokowa. Idia College at Iyaro will handle Kungfu and Karate. At the indoor hall of the Samuel Ogbemudia Stadium we will handle Boxing and Kickboxing. University of Benin Teaching Hospital (UBTH) Field, Ugbowo, would handle cricket.
“The Samuel Ogbemudia Stadium would also take care of swimming, Weightlifting, Gymnastics and Para Powerlifting.
“The Benin Club in the Government Reservation Area (GRA) would handle Squash, Golf and Tennis. Emotan College Football Field, Wire Road would handle Rugby while the S&T Ugbowo is meant for Football. Nonetheless, Cycling would take place across designed routes in Benin.”
Omokhagbor noted that activities would kick off mostly by 9am during the course of the sporting activities starting by Tuesday while the closing ceremony is February 15, 2020 to make room for departure of athletes by February 16, 2020.
He said the state should watch out as the team is poised to break new records, discovering new talents who would upset existing records across the 18 participating local government areas while also beefing up the Team Edo contingent for the National Sports Festival.
