Sports Festival: Torch Bearers Conclude Tour of Edo Central •Esan North East, Central, West, Igueben Upbeat

As preparations for the 3rd Edo State Sports Festival enters the advanced stage, the games Unity Torch has concluded its tour of Esan land. The tour organised by the state’s Sports Commission will cover the state’s 18 local government areas, climaxing with the festival beginning from February 10.

The torch bearers on behalf of the State Government presented the Torch of Unity to Chairman of Esan North East Local Government Council, Hon. Austine Okoibhole. The presentation was done by Sixtus Omokhagbon, the Senior Special Assistant to Governor Godwin Obaseki.

Receiving the torch, Hon. Okoibhole declared that Esan North East Local Government Area was fully prepared for the sports festival.

He said he was very optimistic that his local government would top the medal table at the end of the tournament.

Okoibhole commended the State Government’s preparedness towards the tournament, adding that the reconstruction of Samuel Ogbemudia Stadium and upgrading of other sports facilities in the state was a pointer to that fact.

It was a similar convivial atmosphere at Esan Central, Irrua, Igueben, Esan, Esan West, Ekpoma and Esan South West where their chairmen – Hon Edokpa...., Hon Josie Ogedengbe, Hon Ruth Osagie and Hon Victor Osobasen Emuakhuagbon – enthusiastically expressed their interest and active participation in the games.

The torch bearers immediately began the tour of Edo South with a meeting with Hon Napoleon Agbama, Chairman, Uhunmwode Local Government Council at Ehor, who also expressed their commitment to the state government sports programme.

He assured of their readiness for both the state sports festival and the National to be staged in Benin within two months from now.

The movement of the Unity Torch is scheduled to continue in the southern Edo in Orhionmwon Local Government Area on Wednesday, January 29 and go through Ovia North East and South West before Egor and be concluded in Oredo Local Government on February 10 to herald the games’ opening ceremony same day at the Samuel Ogbemudia Stadium, Benin.
