The Southern States Caretaker Committee Meeting of National Association of Nigerian Footballers (NANPF) held on Monday, December 16, 2019 in Benin, has endorsed major decisions reached by the Northern States meeting held on November 22, 2019 in Abuja. One of these is the fixing of June 2020 for commencement of states councils elections.
The meetings also endorsed the call “for the immediate establishment of the Players Arbitration Committee and National Disputes Resolution Chamber by the NFF, which has not been in existence for the past seven years.”
Below are other decisions, as contained in a communique of the Benin meeting:
“Request all States Councils to reinforce the Players Union relationship with the Trade Union Congress and the States Football Associations at their various states for greater impact of the Union activities on the players
“Request all States Councils to pay more attention to issues bothering on players’ welfare, education, contract, etc, by organising activities such as tournaments, seminars, and anything that will promote the players career and work closer with clubs in ensuring Players Security and Protection before, during and after games, players’ interstate movement to honour away games, such as mode of transportation and time of travel and players camping facility in their various states.
“The States Councils meeting commended the EXCO of the Union for the CAC Registration Certificate of the “Footballers Welfare Foundation” and the “Stephen Keshi Football and Vocational Training Centre” due to their potential impact on the Union and Nigeria players.
“The Meeting commended the President of the Players Union Tijani Babaginda for leading the on-going Players Sensitisation Tour for the Proposed Professional Footballers Pension Scheme tagged “How Footballers can Conquer Poverty”.
“The meeting requested leadership of the union as a matter of urgency to kick start the process of including the President of the Players Union as a member of NFF Executive Committee.
“His presence will definitely guarantee that the interest of Players are projected and protected, since players are usually the first beneficiaries or victims of either good or bad policies within the industry.
“The States Councils Meeting took note of the positive development of the increasing number of former Players in the Board of the States Football Associations. The meeting wants Players to show more interest and commitment in this direction.
“All over the world, the idea of documenting and cementing the relationship between the Players Union bodies and Football Governing Authorities at Global, Continental and National levels through the Concept of the Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA) or Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) for sustainable football development and governance is no longer a hidden secrete.
“The meeting therefore canvassed for a speedy establishment of the proposed CBA between the Players Union and the relevant football governing bodies.”
