Anambra SWAN Set For Maiden Event; To Honour Ubah, Emenike, Ezeonwuka

The Anambra State chapter of the Sports Writers Association of Nigeria (SWAN) will tomorrow, Thursday, November 28, kick off a three days retinue of activities of its maiden SWAN Week.

Speaking on the programme in Awka, the state chairman of SWAN, Tony Orji, said the aim is to encourage sports activities in the state and also appreciate those who have kept sports alive in the state in various ways.

He said the annual programme will honour some distinguished persons that have contributed to the growth of sports in the state.

Orji said: “It is our hope that as we honour some sports-loving individuals in the state, other well-meaning citizens of the state would be spurred to support sports by way of sponsorship so we can take Anambra State back to its glorious state in sports.

“We used to come out tops in sports competitions in this country but suddenly, it appears we have gone to sleep. We have budding talents here in the state, all they require is encouragement and we will be good to go.”

The chairman reeled out the awardees to include the proprietor of FC IfeanyUbah, Senator Ifeanyi Ubah; owner of Rojenny Stadium, Oba in Idemili North Local Government Area of the state, Chief Rommy Ezeonwuka; owner of the biggest stadium in Anambra State, NEROS Stadium, Pauly Emenike; and Fr Obinna Dike of Dosad Football Academy.

Others are proprietors of Aspire FC and Udala FC, as well as the Chairman of the Anambra State House of Assembly Committee on Sports, Hon. Nonso Noble Igwe.

Orji disclosed that the programme will start with a road show that will take off from Anambra Sports Commission office, behind Government House, through the Expressway to terminate at Alex Ekwueme Square.

Expected at the road show are the state Sector Commander of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) and other dignitaries while the game of table tennis and scrabble will be played in the evening.

For the second day, there will be tour of sports facilities across the state and the third day (Saturday) will feature lecture series, installation of patrons, award/gala night to wrap up the programme.
