Super Eagles B captain Chima Akas has been unveiled by Akwa United after he completed a move from Sharks ahead of the 2016 Nigeria Professional Football League, even as Goal has learnt why he chose the Promise Keepers ahead of champions Enyimba.
The 21-year-old played for the relegated Sharks last season and was close to joining champions Enyimba before he was snapped up by the current Federation Cup champions, who are playing in the Caf Confederation Cup – their very first foray into the continent.
The left-back was unveiled on Saturday in Uyo, after Akwa United had lifted the 2016 Super 4 pre-season tournament on Friday.
Goal understands that the player was offered higher wages than what Enyimba had put on the table and chose to join Akwa, even after giving his word to the People’s Elephants.
Akas was offered a monthly salary in the region of N500,000 by Enyimba, and had agreed to join them after the CHAN tournament, only for Akwa United to steal the march by offering him a N650,000 monthly salary.
He will begin training with his new teammates from Monday, ahead of their CAF Confederation Cup opener against Vita Club Mokanda in Congo next weekend.
