The Sports Writers Association of Nigeria (SWAN) Enugu State chapter on Friday inaugurated a five-man caretaker committee to pilot the affairs of the association and conduct a credible election.

Vice President, South East SWAN, Chigozie Chukwuleta, while inaugurating the caretaker committee at SWAN office in Nnamdi Azikiwe Stadium, Enugu, urged the members to conduct a credible election within three months.

The formation of the caretaker committee became necessary following the inability of the former state EXCO to organise election while their tenure extended beyond the duration in office.

Recall that during the South East Zonal meeting held in Umuahia some weeks ago, a decision was reached to form a caretaker committee in Enugu state, to organise election that will usher in a new EXCO.

The five-man caretaker committee are Andrew Nnebedum, Chairman; Richard Asiegbu, Secretary; Chinedu Adonu, member; Odogwu Odemenam, member; and Gideon Iwueke, member.

Comrade Chukwulota charged the committee to strive for more members while planning to conduct a credible and acceptable election within three months of inauguration.

She said: “The purpose of this inauguration is just to make it official and allow the association carry on in a good environment and drive for more members. I was so happy when I saw the names, though I don’t know the young ones but the elders among them are the pioneers of SWAN.

“I want you as a body to go for membership drive in the state, let the status of SWAN be the Bible you are reading in the day. Let that peace and togetherness come back in Enugu SWAN as the bedrock of South East SWAN.

“You have three months and make sure within these three months, you will get things done right. Don’t use the office to stamp on anybody and don’t allow anybody to stop you from driving.

“Let every member, both new and old, register as a SWAN member to allow them contest for any position and be allowed to vote.”

While urging all members to get SWAN statute to be guided, Comrade Chukwulota advised that members should also register for IPDS for a lot of benefits awaits members.

Responding, the caretaker committee chairman, Andrew Nnebedum, assured that the committee would make Enugu SWAN come back to what it used to be.

He promised that the committee would make sure that it conducts a credible and acceptable election within three months.
