Young players under the age of 16 in Benin City would have a big opportunity of seeing their dreams of becoming full-time professionals get a boost when Bayern Munich coaches and scout come calling at the end of the month.
The annual Bayern Munich Youth Cup competition (Edo State Zone) will hold from November 28 to 30 at the Ahuoba Sports Crescent pitch in Benin City.
The competition serves a dual purpose for youth clubs to showcase their players to Bayern officials and hope they can get their players selected by the German giants. As well, the tournament serves as an avenue for the clubs to bolster their prestige amongst their peers.
Every grassroots club lays claim to being top class when it comes to the business of grooming players. However, a true indication of the best comes when players are picked by foreign clubs.
Meanwhile a coordinator of the Bayern Munich programme, Precious Asemota, has urged clubs yet to pick their registration forms to so.
"I like to inform all teams interested in the upcoming FC BAYERN YOUTH CUP tournament slated for 28th to 30th this month, show their interest by picking up the registration form. Enrollment has commenced already. The enrollment fee is 10,000 naira," he said.
There would expectedly be a screening exercise on the first day of the program to ensure that only players that fall within the age bracket required are allowed to participate.
Screening will commence by 9am and each team is expected to register 15 players each for the competition.
At the end of the tournament in Benin City, 10 best players will be selected by the organisers to take part for the national finals coming up at a later date.
Meanwhile, Edo grassroots club Benin Warriors FC are gearing up for the Bayern Youth Cup with excitement.
Rex Roy Bob a coach at the club said:
"Benin Warriors will take part in the Bayern Youth Cup competition. Bayern Munich are one of the best known and widely followed clubs in world club football and getting the club to take a look at your players with a view to possibly signing them is a big deal to every youth club. We are certainly taking the program seriously and we hope our young Warriors will give a good account of themselves."
Strikers Courage Aigbangbee and Osazee Stevens, midfielders Rukewe Sagay, Victor Perry and Kingsley Idahosa as well as pacy wingers Stanley Ifalodun and Daniel Uto Wisdom are some of the youngsters who are catching the attention of fans of the club with their remarkable improvements and will be hoping to impress the Bayern officials.
