Poor organisation threatens to mar Lagos City Marathon

By Adeyinka Akintunde, Lagos on February 5, 2016

Many Nigerians that registered to run in the 2016 Lagos City Marathon holding tomorrow have been left seething with rage as a result of poor organisation which is threatening to mar the much hyped international meet. As at 3pm today, many of the registered participants were yet to be supplied with kits for the race starting by 7am on Saturday.

One of them, who spoke with Daily Sports on the condition of anonymity, blamed the organisers for being “unserious.” According to him, “Any serious sports person who has a competition the next day is not supposed to do any work whatsoever. He is meant to relax, have fun, while at the other hand preparing for the next day, but I am here still under the sun, waiting for my kits.”

Another prospective athlete, who also did not want his name revealed, said: “They came earlier to share 10 kits, and at another time, 20 kits. Now we have been waiting for over an hour now, and we have not seen anybody.”

Over 20,000 runners are expected to participate in the marathon, which was last held over 30 years ago. Among them is Kenya’s Peter Kiplagat, who won the 2015 Geneva Marathon.

The 42-kilometre race with a total prize money of N92 million will start at the National Stadium Lagos and finish at the Eko Atlantic City.
