The Vice-Chairman of the medical team for the 2016 Lagos Marathon Race, Dr. Akin George, has assured that adequate arrangement have been made for the athletes to prevent any casualty. Speaking at the Teslim Balogun Stadium, Lagos, where the elite athletes were received and registered yesterday, Dr. George said that there will be about 150 medical staff on ground, and designated hospitals from Surulere, which is the starting point up till Eko Atlantic City, the finishing point.
“We have made adequate arrangements for the athletes. We have about 150 medical personnel, who are going to be here on ground, and these include consultants in various fields, then medical doctors in various fields, nurses, physiotherapist, pharmacists and the paramedics,” he said.
In the case of any emergency before getting to any medical station, “we have a lineup of ambulances, about 15 of them, and they are lining the street, from the beginning to the end and they will go after any emergency,” he said.
On his part, the head of volunteers, Ebidowei Oweifie, assured that the volunteer team will have an excellent outing during the international marathon race. He disclosed that the successful 1,000-man volunteer team (who were screened from the initial 5,000 that registered) has been adequately trained and will not disappoint Lagosians and Nigerians on Saturday.
In terms of security, Anthony Adeyinka Adeboye, the Senior Special Adviser to the Lagos State Governor on Security and Sports, said that Nigerians should “expect the best security so far, in Lagos State, when we talk of competition.”
He said that since this is the first time there will be a marathon of this magnitude in Lagos in 30 years, adequate security arrangements have been put in place. Adeboye disclosed that personnel of the Nigeria Police, Air Force, Army, the Lagos State Transport Management Agency (LASTMA), among others, will be present at the 42-kilometre race. He pleaded with Lagosians to “come out en-masse to come and see the first full marathon race in Lagos, after 30 years,” since there will be no vehicular movement in the routes, during the marathon.
