Robert Lewandowski has informed Bayern Munich of his intention to leave the club, the player’s agent revealed.
There have been no offers for the player yet, but Manchester United, Chelsea and Manchester City have all shown interest, although they face competition from Real Madrid and Paris Saint-Germain.
The 29-year-old is under contract at the Bundesliga champions until 2021, but recently hired super-agent Pini Zahavi - the man behind Neymar's world-record move to PSG – to negotiate a deal to release him from the club.
It is understood that if Lewandowski has to stay at Bayern, he will not go on strike but it has been made clear that his motivation to score goals will not be there.
Speaking to Sport Bild, Zahavi said: “Robert feels he needs a change and a new challenge in his career. The managers of Bayern know about it.”
Lewandowski joined Bayern from Borussia Dortmund in 2014, and has scored 151 goals in 195 games, topping the Bundesliga scoring charts in two of the past three seasons.
He has tasted league success in every season at Bayern, though he has endured a frustrating run in the Champions League, exiting at the semi-final stage in three of his four seasons with the club – with a quarter-final defeat coming in 2017.
But with three years remaining on his current deal, Bayern chief executive Karl-Heinz Rummenigge insisted earlier in May that Lewandowski will still be at the club next season.
“They do not have to worry about Robert Lewandowski and the relationship with Bayern,” Rummenigge told Kicker. “We have a very good one.
“We know what we have in Robert Lewandowski. I am very happy that we still have such a long-term contract. [There’s] no need to worry – he will also play next season at Bayern Munich.” (Sky Sports)
