Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL) leading scorer Stephen Odey has been named the player for March by the League Bloggers Awards (LBA).
The MFM FC striker fended off the challenge from an impressive shortlist of players that include Enyimba captain Mfon Udoh, Samuel Mathias of El-Kanemi Warriors and Nasarawa United goalkeeper Suraj Ayeleso.
Odey was influential in front of goal for MFM FC, scoring seven of their 10 goals in March – 70 per cent of their total goals for the month under review. The teenage forward scored the winner in their 1-0 win over Remo Stars on Matchday 12 and followed up with another strike in a 1-1 draw at Enyimba the next matchday.
He then put Plateau United to the sword by scoring the two goals in their 2-1 win on 19 March and Odey netted another brace of goals to see off Rivers United 2-1.
The MFM man then rounded off a fine month with one of the goals that helped his team to a 2-1 win against Abia Warriors. Samuel Mathias of El-Kanemi Warriors, Mfon Udoh of Enyimba and Nasarawa United goalkeeper Suraj Ayeleso were the other nominees for the player's award.
Odey has now won the LBA player award for the month in this season's NPFL twice after he was named winner in January.
It was a clean sweep for MFM as Fidelis Ilechukwu got the manager's award for March.
The MFM manager led his team to four wins, two draws and two losses. Ilechukwu masterminded two away draws at Enyimba and Wikki Tourists and then followed up with two back to back victories over title contenders Plateau United and one of the division's heavyweights River United.
Ilechukwu also oversaw defeats at Katsina United and Gombe United but his team had put together 14 points, three more than any other side in March. The trio of Kabiru Dogo of Nasarawa United, Abdullahi Biffo of Abia Warriors and Kadiri Ikhana of Kano Pillars fell short as their teams got 11 points apiece.
