Rivers United qualified for the semi-finals of the Gov Okowa Pre-Season Tourney following a 1-1 draw with MFM FC in their final group match yesterday (Monday).
The Olukoya Boys produced an inspired performance at the Stephen Keshi Stadium in Asaba, Delta State, but could not prevail.
MFM, underperformers since the competition got underway, went in front courtesy of a fourth minute spot kick from Clement Ogu.
Tony Bolus’ wards were given a warning when Chigozie Ihunda’s penalty kick came off the bar.
The Lagos side were stunned when Bakari Bamba equalised in the 85th minute. MFM have picked only a solitary point in Group A while Rivers United remain firmly at the top.
A delighted Stanley Eguma, Head Coach Rivers United, while speaking after the game said: “We took part in the Gov Okowa Pre-Season Tourney with a view of giving some players some test games.
“And this has paid off as we now know the quality of each and every player.
“We’ve have used different squads for the games we played, as the experienced ones were used in the game against Delta Force, while a mix of our young lads and some who were recommended to us played today Monday.
“At the end, the team got 8 points from four games. This is a good omen for us.”
The tournament enters Day 7 today (Tuesday) with teams playing their last group games.
In Group A MFM will play Abia Warriors by 10am while Niger Tornadoes will play home team Delta Force by 2pm and the last game is Lobi Stars vs Kwara United in Group B.
