Last season’s top-two clubs in the Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL) suffered defeats on day two of the Super 4 on Friday.
Federation Cup holders, Akwa United, edged Enyimba 1-0 while Wolves also lost by a goal to Nasarawa United at the Ahmadu Bello Stadium in Kaduna.
Enyimba named some of their heavyweights for the clash with Akwa United, including captain Chinedu Udoji, Rasak Aliyu, Ugwu Uwadiegwu, Daniel Etor, Nzube Anaezemba and record NPFL goalscorer for a single season, Mfon Udoh.
The Cup champions came out tops with Harrison Ibukun’s header settling matters between the two sides.
Akwa United took the lead on 17 minutes and held off the People’s Elephant for 73 minutes and should have even doubled their on different occasions through Cyril Olisemah, Ubong Ekpai and Ubong Friday who were guilty of missing gilt-edged chances.
Enyimba goalkeeper, Moses Ocheje, also played his role by ensuring the attempts of Michael Ibe and Emeka Isaac did not find target.
Despite a good start by Wolves in the second game of Friday against Nasarawa United, they failed to avoid defeat. On eight minutes Sikiru Alimi’s shot was kept out by Danladi Umar in Nasarawa United goal.
Former Nigerian under-17 star, King Osanga, was also a handful for the Nasarawa United defence in the early period with his dribble runs, which left his markers with the only option of upending to make sure he does not wreak them.
It took 51 minutes before a goal was recorded in the game as Philip Azango headed in a corner kick to give Nasarawa United the lead.
Azango’s goal proved just enough to help Nasarawa United earn the full points against Wolves, who had their captain Goodluck Onamado sent off for a second bookable offence.
Nasarawa United now lead the standings of the Super 4 with four points after two rounds of matches. Wolves and Akwa United are tied on three points while Enyimba occupy bottom spot with a point.
