Ex-WAFU chief Austin Akosa dies after brief illness

Mr Austin Akosa, a former spokesman of the West African Football Union (WAFU), has died in Lagos.

According to his brother, Chuka Akosa, the late former President of the Nigeria Coaches Association popularly known as Suzy died on Saturday, Jan. 16, 2016, after a brief illness.

Born in 1941, Akosa retired from the National Sports Commission (NSC), where he had served on many National federations as organising secretary, including the Nigeria Football Association (NFA) during the Nigeria/Biafra Civil War.

He also served in the Nigeria Lawn Tennis Association (NLTA) in 1974 as well as the Nigeria Table Tennis Association (NTTA).

Akosa was at one time on the board of the Nigeria Football Association in his capacity as President of the Coaches Association. He served as match commissioner in top soccer engagements across the African continent.

Akosa attended the Holy Cross Primary School, St Gregory College, Obalende, Lagos, and the Ashridge College, London. He was one of the pioneer students of the Nigeria Institute for Sports (NiSports).

He was a member of the Yoruba Tennis Club.

The family will in due course announce a burial plan. (thenff.com)
