Bayelsa Queens Overcome Aiteo Cup Winners in NWPL Match Day 2 Clash

By Anthony Obaseki on August 3, 2019

Defending champions Bayelsa Queens FC against all odds kept their hope of a successful defence of their title by defeating their hosts and Aiteo Cup winners Nasarawa Amazons by two goals to one in match day 2 of the Nigerian Women Professional League (NWPL) played on Friday at the Lafia Township Stadium.

When the game started, Nasarawa Amazons took the fireworks to Bayelsa Queens, piling pressure to get a goal, but the Restoration Girls from Yenagoa withstood all their onslaught.

In the 25th minute of play, Anjor Mary made a solo run with the ball from 35 yards to go past four defenders to score the first goal for Bayelsa Queens.

The tally was thought to have been extended when a free kick was awarded to Bayelsa Queens outside the Amazons’ 18-yard box in the 44th minute and Igwe Uzoamaka scored. The centre referee blew for goal and was moving to the centre, but an Amazon player shouted off side and the Assistant Referee 2, who was also moving to the centre, stopped and raised her flag for offside. The centre referee turned saw the flag raised and also blew offside against Bayelsa Queens.

The first half ended one nil in favour of the Restoration Girls. On resumption for the second stanza, Nasarawa Amazons pressed harder and it paid off in the 54th minute when they equalised through Amarachi Odoma.

However, the equaliser never dampened the spirit of the players of Bayelsa Queens as Anjor Mary scored again only four minutes later.

With this victory, Bayelsa Queens FC are top of Group C with six points, followed by Sunshine Queens FC on four points, Nasarawa Amazons are on one point while Kaduna Queens have no point.

Next assignment for Bayelsa Queens is a home match against Sunshine Queens of Akure in Yenagoa.
