In the past few weeks, this column has been devoted to issues concerning contract between players and clubs playing in the Nigerian Professional Football League (NPFL).
This week I am pleased to publish the reaction of former football star Edema Fuludu, who holds the view that players and coaches are being left to hold the short end of the stick. Below is Edema Fuludu’s reaction:
“Dear Amobi,
“Good day. The NFF, LMC and NNL keep paying lip service to the applicability of this and other provisions. This is as crystal clear as rising daylight sun. The liberty of players is at variance to the objectives of the regulators which is modern day slavery.
“The Nigeria Professional League has improved to the extent that referees are not owed, Security agents are not owed, those sitting on the various boards are not owed, endorsement revenue comes and the players are not part of the sharing formula, etc. The players and coaches are always at the receiving end as if they are dregs of society.
“Until the NFF begins to understand that our success and development of football is not tied to the national teams, but to the leagues at all levels will there be real development where contractual obligations are met.
“Imagine pro players being owed salaries and other emoluments over months on end across the length and breadth of this country. Year-in, year-out the status quo remains. Arbitration decisions are so, so difficult to implement. Without the players there’s no football.”
