Former Nigeria coach Clemens Westerhof has labelled the Super Eagles’ loss to Madagascar at the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations a “disgrace”.
Nigeria suffered a surprise 2-0 loss at the hands of the Nations Cup debutants earlier this week, a result which cost them a place at the top of Group B.
Lalaina Nomenjanahary and Carolus Andriamatsinoro scored the goals for Barea as they secured a famous win over the West African giants and advanced in style on their AFCON debut.
Dutch manager Westerhof, who led Nigeria to their second Nations Cup title in 1994, said he was shocked by the result.
“Who is Madagascar? Where are they in Africa and the World? Who are their players and where do they play?” said the 79-year-old to Nigeria’s Complete Sports.
“I’m surprised, it’s a shame that Super Eagles, with big and experienced players, disappointed us.”
Westerhof said that Gernot Rohr’s gamble to shuffle his team for the match against the debutants was to blame for the result.
“The tactics was wrong, the changes were many from the players that played against Burundi and Guinea,” he explained.
“Yes, maybe they didn’t give Madagascar any chance [underestimated them].
“It’s difficult to believe Super Eagles lost to a Madagascar team I can’t find [on the map].”
