The Nigerian Wrestling Federation (NWF) discovered three wrestlers during the 3rd Governor Dickson National Wrestling Classics concluded on Monday, July 1, 2019 in Yenegoa, capital of Bayelsa State.
NWF in a release made available to Daily Sports Nigeria (dailysportsng.com) gave the names of the athletes as Clever Undunipere of Sports Academy Bayelsa State in the Greco Roman 46kg; Stephen Israel of Delta State in the Freestyle 46kg; and Popoola Rebecca of Ondo State in the Women Wrestling 36kg.
President of the Federation, Hon Dr Daniel Igali, said in the statement that the three “will be great athletes in the future,” adding: “With what they displayed here and more training they are future world champions.”
Sponsor of the championship, the Governor of Bayelsa State, Honourable Seriake Dickson, was hand to declare it closed yesterday.
The championship was moved forward to yesterday because the sports-loving Governor wanted to be present for the final and closing ceremonies, Igali said.
“You saw the Governor was there to draw the curtain as he earlier promised during the opening ceremony. It was the vivid reason why he the Governor moved the finals from Sunday to Monday so he could attend,” Igali further said.
Governor Dickson in his speech described wrestling as the traditional sport of Ijaw people and vowed to ensure that the championship would grow from strength to strength. He urged the wrestlers to remain focused and steadfast so as to succeed.
