The Local Organising Committee (LOC) of Lagos Open Tennis has congratulated Mr. Babajide Sanwo-Olu on his inauguration as the new Governor of Lagos State on May 29, 2019.

The Lagos Open, formerly the Governor’s Cup Lagos Tennis Championship, has been an annual international tournament being staged to celebrate the sitting Governor of Lagos since the administration of Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu to the government of Babatunde Raji Fashola and erstwhile Governor Akinwunmi Ambode.

A statement issued on behalf of the Chairman, Chief Pius Akinyelure, Trustees and members of the LOC reads: “Congratulations to His Excellency, Mr. Babajide Olusola Sanwo-Olu, and best wishes as you assume the office of Governor of Lagos State. The sun is shining all over as you commence the journey of building a greater Lagos.”

The Management Team of Lagos Open, an International Tennis Federation (ITF)-approved tournament which has been staged consistently since 1999, said that they are ready to work with the new Governor to take Lagos, one of the emerging mega cities of the world, to the zenith in the world of tennis.

“We wish you well and look forward to the journey with you especially in putting Lagos in the professional Tennis map of the world,” the statement reads.

Lagos Open Tennis is a $100,000 tournament on the ITF World Tennis Tour and comprises two legs, which hold for a week each, with $50,000 ($25, 000 for the men’s and women’s event each) the prize-money for each week.

The 2019 event, which will be the first in the government of Sanwo-Olu and the 18th edition, according to the ITF, will hold from October 7-20, with the first leg holding from October 7 – 13, while the second leg will run from October 14 – 20.

The tournament has been a destination for emerging tennis players across the world every year with over 300 players across the world always converging in the city of Lagos each year for two weeks of exciting tennis action at the Lagos Lawn Tennis Club, Onikan, Lagos.

Last year, the grand finale was declared closed by the former Governor Ambode, who also played an exhibition match on the centre court of the Lagos Lawn Tennis Club.

Great Britain star, Jack Draper and Pranjala Yadlapalli from India won the men and women’s singles respectively of the second leg of the competition. Draper, the number 4 seed of the tournament, caused a major upset of the final match when he defeated his challenger, top seed Tom Jomby of France in a tough game that ended 1-6 6-3 6-4. Yadlapalli, the tournament number 6 seed, also upset the top seed Conny Perrin from Switzerland 6-1 7-6 (2).
