Just as the European Champions League is serving us very exciting and exhilarating matches, the 5th edition of the Bet9ja Super Agents Cup competition holding at the S&T Barack in Benin City, Edo State, is living up to the billing.
Brilliant individual performances from young grassroots players have been on show and surprising upsets have been recorded with the promise of even more to come when the quarter-finals kick off on Friday.
Defending champions Rockers FC were rocked by a fantastic ball-playing Fatal Dragons of Ekpoma who came from an early goal down to score three well-worked first half goals in a very thrilling high tempo second round match.
Rockers pulled one back to make it 3-2 but found the Dragons’ backline impossible to bridge for the third time.
All the goals in the game were a good advertisement for Edo State grassroots football: Fast-paced passing, quick give and goes, cut backs and finishes with aplomb.
Earlier in the day, BJ Foundation proved too strong for Yak FC in their round of 16 tie. BJ defender Chinaka scored with a beautiful free kick from the edge of the Yak box with only few minutes to the end of the game to break the stubborn defensive performance of the Yak team.
Yak are floated by ex-Super Eagles striker Yakubu Aiyegbeni. Recently the team sacked their long-serving coach Emmanuel Okhenebo, a one-time Nigerian junior international goalkeeper. Yak are understood to be in considerable disarray, with some players loyal Okhenebo (popularly known as Maleke) reportedly refusing to give their best to the Bet9ja campaign while the coach has even quickly formed a club of his own known as Bokas FC.
In another second round game, host team Rolly FC and Clibber FC battled to a scoreless draw in a match of quality entertainment. Both sides are renowned for their smooth passing style of play and it was fully on display in the Tuesday afternoon fixture. Rolly won the ensuing penalty shootout to book their quarter-final spot.
It also took penalty shootout to separate Fame against Eagles Wings and in the end the more fancied Eagles Wings lost in the shootout.
Former Edo State FA cup champions Ine Stars gave a masterclass performance in their round of 16 clash against Nadia FC, winning 6-0 to set up a potentially explosive quarter-final tie with Rolly FC on Friday afternoon.
BJ will lock horns with Auchi FC in the first quarter-final game on Friday.
On Saturday Mission Side will engage Flying Stars FC while Fatal Dragons will seek to end the rollercoaster run of underdogs Fame FC.
Meanwhile, organisers of the Bet9ja Super Agents Cup have promised prizes for anyone who correctly predicts the results of the remaining matches of the competition. A statement by the Public Relations Officer (PRO) of Edo State Bet9ja Kennedy Ugbodaga reads:
“Bet9ja is here again with big offers to football lovers here in Edo state. This is a rare chance for all predictors to predict a correct score of any match in the ongoing Edo State Bet9ja Super Agent Cup, starting from the quarter finals to the finals proper.
“Any person who predicts a score correctly stands a chance to win catchy and attractive prizes in the raffle draw on the final day of the competition. Prizes like Flat screen televisions, Bag of rice, and Clippers could be won. So hurry now and predict for this is a once in a lifetime offer.”
