Nigeria’s chances of qualifying for the semi-finals of the on-going Senegal 2015 CAF U-23 Nations Cup and eventually securing a ticket to the 2016 Rio Olympics in Brazil suffered a setback as they were held to a 2-2 draw this night by Egypt.
Oghenecaro Etobo converted two first half penalties to give Nigeria a good lead, but the Young Pharaohs came alive in the second half, just as Mali did in Nigeria’s first match on Sunday that the Dream Team VI narrowly won 3-2. Ramadan Ahmed reduced the tally for Egypt in the 47th minute, and an own-goal by Amaefule Chizoba made it 2-2 for the Young Pharaohs four minutes later.
The result puts Algeria, who had earlier defeated Mali 2-0, at the top of the group with four points, and a better goal difference than Nigeria (also on four points). Egypt also has a chance of qualifying for the the semi-finals, if they beat Mali, and Nigeria fails to beat Algeria.
