Dennerby Demands Improvement from Super Falcons

By Daily Sports on March 10, 2019

Nigeria women must improve in all departments to perform excellently at the 2019 Fifa Women's World Cup in France, according to coach Thomas Dennerby.

The nine-time African champions finished seventh at the just concluded Cyprus Women's Cup, rounding off with a 3-0 win over Thailand.

After two wins and two losses, the Swede highlighted some positives from the 12-nation tournament as well as the areas they need to improve on before the summer's global showpiece.

"It's been a little bit of up and down as we've been very good in periods and weak in some," Dennerby told Goal

"Overall, we have a really good defence in open play but there is a need to be more stable on set pieces defensively.

"We also have good quick and counter-attacks but need to work with build up from the midfield to have more variation in attacks.

"We defeated Slovakia and should have scored more goals despite the incidents in the match. We won 3-0 against Thailand and were very stable.

"We equally had a strong performance against

Austria even though we lost badly due to the early red card. We had a weak game against

Belgium."

Former African Women Player of the Year Asisat Oshoala returned to the team's fold after missing January's trip to China for administrative reasons.

In Cyprus, the 24-year-old scored twice in four games and the 59-year-old gaffer has expressed delight with her impressive showing.

"I am happy with her form. Asisat [Oshoala] has been working extremely hard. She performed very well,” he continued.

“We also had different players that had good performances in different games. They all need to keep improving.

"We still need to improve in all departments – both defensively and offensively. We need to link it all together."

The African queens have now played six games so far this year ahead of their preparations for the Women's World Cup in France and they are expected to regroup early in April. (Goal)
