Abia Angels Football Club of Aba lost 2-0 to NWFL Group D table toppers, Kogi Confluence Queens, in a week 3 duel decided at Kogi Confluence Stadium, Lokoja.

The home team were more determined and more aggressive, showng more composure at the third end of the pitch. That pushed Abia Angels defenders led by Alani Amina to defend deep but such did not help matters in 33 minutes when defender Geraldine Amadi fouled Esther Kanu outside the 18-yard box and Irit Usang curled home beyond the wall for the first goal of the match, which received applause from the fans at the stadium.

Stung by the goal, Abia Angels pushed for an equaliser and got a clear-cut chance in the 34rd minute but could not capitalise on it when Offor Merit in a sleeky move set up Nwankwo Chika but her smart loop was not on target after beating Monle Omini in goal for Kogi Confluence Queens.

The visitors kept pushing for a goal but it never came as Itimi Mercy could not capitalise on a defensive mix-up to hit the flat-footed Kogi Confluence Queens defenders.

On the resumption of the second half Kogi Confluence Queens continued quest for the winning goal but the Abia Angels defenders kept them away from scoring. What is more, excellent goalkeeping by Olatunjoye Tolani saved an intelligent flick from Ozunuchi Amaefule for a corner kick.

It was a ding-dong affair but with the home team looking more vibrant in search for more goals. However, when goal-bound Esther Kanu was hacked down at the edge of the goal area but the resultant free kick was poorly executed by Aweda Titilayo for a goal kick to Abia Angels.

Finally, in the 69 minutes Esther Kanu slotted home into the net for Kogi Confluence Queens for the second goal of the match when the goalkeeper wrongly timed her touch of the ball.

The introduction of Chineye Emenike, Nnaneme Nwamaka and Christiana Chinaza for Abia Angels added more power to the team but met strong opposition from the Kogi Confluence Queens defence line led by experienced Kemi Famuditi.

With the 2-0 victory, Kogi Confluence Queens sit on top of the Group D log with 7 points from 3 games to end the first stanza of the abridged NWFL 2019.
