UEFA Champions League: No goals in Paris, joy for Manchester giants, Galatasaray, Malmö

By Daily Sports on October 22, 2015

Paris Saint-Germain v Real Madrid ended goalless, Manchester City scored late to defeat Sevilla, and Galatasaray and Malmö earned long-awaited group victories while Manchester United pulled off a 1-1 draw in Moscow against hosts CSKA. That largely tells the story of last night’s UEFA Champions League clashes. Below is the summary, courtesy of uefa.com:

GROUP A

Malmö 1-0 Shakhtar Donetsk

Mircea Lucescu’s 100th UEFA Champions League game as a coach, group stage to final, brought disappointment. Markus Rosenberg decided the contest in favour of the Swedish side. Shakhtar’s Andriy Pyatov limited the damage, saving Nikola Djurdjić’s second-half penalty.

Paris Saint-Germain 0-0 Real Madrid

A match billed in many quarters as a shoot-out between Zlatan Ibrahimović and Cristiano Ronaldo produced only a stalemate. Both teams have a healthy four-point lead over third-placed Malmö.

GROUP B

CSKA Moskva 1-1 Manchester United

David de Gea kept out Roman Eremenko’s penalty but Seydou Doumbia followed up to convert the rebound. Anthony Martial headed United level after the break.

Wolfsburg 2-0 PSV Eindhoven

Dutch international Bas Dost put Wolfsburg ahead against his countrymen early in the second half. Max Kruse made the points safe for Dieter Hecking’s men, now two points clear of CSKA and United at the top of the group. Diego Benaglio saved PSV substitute Jürgen Locadia’s added-time spot kick.

GROUP C

Atlético Madrid 4-0 Astana

Saúl Ñíguez, Jackson Martínez, Óliver Torres and a late Denys Dedechko own goal accounted for an Astana side missing six regulars, rested for a potential weekend title decider against Kairat Almaty. New pacesetters Atlético join Benfica on six points.

Galatasaray 2-1 Benfica

Nicolás Gaitán got the quickest goal in this season’s group stage – after 74 seconds, his third in his last three European outings – but it was not enough for Benfica. Selçuk İnan soon levelled from the spot, Lukas Podolski then earning Cimbom their first UEFA Champions League triumph since matchday six of 2013/14.

GROUP D

Juventus 0-0 Borussia Mönchengladbach

The visitors gained their first point from an encounter short on clear-cut opportunities. Early in the second half, Gianluigi Buffon surpassed Alessandro Del Piero and set a new record for the most minutes played in a Juventus shirt.

Manchester City 2-1 Sevilla

City, through Adil Rami’s unfortunate own goal, swiftly responded to Yevhen Konoplyanka’s opener. Kevin De Bruyne had the final word, driving a low shot past Sergio Rico in the first minute of added time. The Citizens are a point shy of frontrunners Juventus.
