Activities marking this year’s Nigeria Cup 2015, organised by Ikoyi Golf Club, attracted over 200 golfers during the qualifiers. But only 100 players picked slots to participate in the finals of the 18-year-old tournament that would come to a climax on October 3, in the club’s premises.
The annual championship is opened mainly for the amateur cadre, and is primarily to commemorate Nigeria’s Independence anniversary every October 1. This year’s event, according to Chairman of Ikoyi Club, Lanre Kalejaiye, is a fully sponsored seven-day tournament, which will focus on the discovery of youths as major potential of the game and also encourage them in their pursuit to get better in the sport.
“The proceeds from the Nigeria Cup since inception are channelled to the less privileged in the society, as the remaining goes into the development of the golf community and sundry.” According to him, the theme of the 2015 tournament is ‘The seven shades of green.’ “The event has continued to grow as well as attract new innovations, and setting the tone to strengthen the dynamics of the game,” he posited.
He further revealed that it was in the light of the above that the first day of the tournament has been fully dedicated to youths, which signifies that the development of youths is paramount in the mind of the management of the premier golf outfit in the country, because the game belongs to them. The caddies will take the centre-stage on the second day of the championship. The ladies will confront themselves on the third day while October 3 has been slated for the grand finale.
“Let me remind us that golfers from other golf clubs across the country will be on hand to try themselves for size; also the sponsors and the veterans will play. It is instructive to note that 180 players will be squaring up for the ultimate prize. However, one of the highlights of the Nigeria Cup 2015 will be the presentation of the prestigious trophy to the winner.”
