Uruguay ‘working hard’ on 2030 World Cup bid

By Daily Sports on November 16, 2018

The president of Uruguay has said the country is “working hard” on a bid to co-host the 2030 World Cup with Argentina and Paraguay.

The tournament will take place on the 100th anniversary of the first World Cup in Uruguay in 1930, but the bidding process has not yet begun and is expected to start in 2020.

Asked whether hosting this month’s Under-17 Women’s World Cup in Montevideo this month was a first step towards 2030, president Tabare Vazquez told reporters it was “a very important time for Uruguayan sport.”

“We are working on that [a joint bid for 2030],” he said. “We are going to have contact with FIFA executives and we are working hard with Argentina and Paraguay.”

Several countries have already declared their intention to stage the 2030 tournament.

Serbia, Romania, Bulgaria and Greece plan to submit a joint bid, while Morocco will be in the running after missing out to a joint North American bid on staging the 2026 tournament.

UEFA president Aleksander Ceferin has said he would back England or a combined British bid to stage the event.

The Spanish FA, meanwhile, wants government support for the country to stage its first major tournament since the 1982 World Cup. (ESPN)
