Former Ghana Football Association president Kwesi Nyantakyi has indicated he will appeal the lifetime ban imposed on him by FIFA at the Court of Arbitration for Sports.
Nyantakyi said in a statement that he is shocked and deeply saddened by the ruling of the FIFA Ethics Adjudicatory Committee, and will “urgently appeal the decision as I think it was unfair, harsh and unwarranted”.
FIFA said on Tuesday that it has banned Nyantakyi “from all football-related activities [administrative, sports or any other] at both national and international level” for violating its rules on conflict of interest, bribery and corruption.
The life ban and fine stems from an investigative piece by the undercover journalist Anas Aremeyaw Anas, who filmed Nyantakyi in a sting operation discussing how to divert part of sponsorship money meant for the GFA.
He was also filmed accepting a cash gift from the undercover journalist in the documentary “Number 12, When Greed and Corruption Become The Norm”.
Nyantakyi became GFA president in 2005 until his fall in June this year. He also rose to become the vice-president of the Confederation of African Football and the president of the West Africa Football Union. (ESPN)
