Liverpool injury concerns grow as Keita carried off in Guinea clash

By Daily Sports on October 17, 2018

Naby Keita has become the latest Liverpool player to suffer an injury problem during the current international break after he was carried off the pitch in Guinea's Africa Cup of Nations match against Rwanda on Tuesday.

The midfielder suffered a suspected thigh injury in the first half, and had to be carried off the pitch by a team-mate with a stretcher not available.

Keita’s injury continues a disastrous international break for Jurgen Klopp’s side with several key players picking up knocks while with their respective national teams.

Mohamed Salah was forced off late in Egypt’s win over Swaziland before returning to Merseyside for further tests ahead of Saturday’s clash with Huddersfield Town while fellow forward Sadio Mane suffered a broken thumb in Senegal training on Monday.

Virgil van Dijk, meanwhile, withdrew from the Netherlands squad despite having scored in their win over Germany as he continues his recovery from a rib injury that plagued him ahead of the break.

This all follows James Milner’s substitution in the first half of the Reds’ goalless draw with Manchester City ahead of the break, with the former England midfielder having suffered a hamstring injury.

With Keita having now joined the quartet in the treatment room, there is the potential for Klopp to be facing a number of selection dilemmas upon his team's return to action.

Reports do suggest that Salah, Van Dijk and Mane will all likely be fit to face Huddersfield due to their injuries not being overly severe while there are even suggestions Milner could be in the reckoning despite initial fears he could face over a month out.

Keita, too, has a recent history of making quick recoveries from injury after being withdrawn against Napoli with a back spasm, only to replace the stricken Milner against City four days later.

Klopp will be hopeful of having all five fit and ready as soon as possible as he gears up for a number of crunch fixtures in the coming weeks, including a Champions League double-header against Red Star Belgrade and a Premier League clash away at Arsenal in early November.

The Anfield outfit currently sit third in the league table behind Manchester City and Chelsea on goal difference following an unbeaten start to the season for all three sides. (Goal.com)
