Nyasa Big Bullets etched their name into the history books of Malawian football setting a new record as far as unbeaten matches are concerned.
Bullets achieved the feat after beating Kamuzu Barracks 6-0 on Sunday (16 September 2018) in the TNM Super League to break a record which has existed since 2000. A brace each from Chiukepo Msowoya and Bright Munthali, coupled with one each from Musa Manyenje and Nelson Kangunje sealed victory.
Bullets are now unbeaten in 21 games this season and in 39 league consecutive matches since last season. Their last defeat dates back 16 July 2017, a 2-1 loss to Silver Strikers.
The record 12-time league winners are on course to match a record which Escom United, now defunct, set when they finished the 2008/09 season unbeaten in 28 league games.
Prior to that, Be Forward Wanderers masterminded an earlier feat in 2000/01 when they finished that season unbeaten in 28 games.
Bullets are one of the most successful clubs in the South East African country followed by Silver (eight titles) and Wanderers (six championships).
For the current season, Bullets are also unbeaten in 10 home league games, have scored the highest number of goals, 39, and conceded the least goals – nine.
After achieving the 21-match unbeaten run, Bullets coach Rodgers Yasini declared that his charges are determined to seal the title they last won in 2015, with nine matches to go.
“This victory was as important as it puts us further ahead in the championship race. Our target is now to finish the season unbeaten,” Yasini told the media.
Bullets lead the table with 49 points from 21 games, followed by Silver with 43 points from same number of games. Defending champions, Be Forward Wanderers, sit third on 42 points.
Escom legend Heston Munthali, who was part of the squad which finished that season unbeaten, said there is a lot that is involved to achieve such feat.
“During that season, we used to concentrate on each game at a time. We had a lot of machinery in attack at our disposal. Scoring was not for a particular player. We had depth. I am sure Bullets can achieve the same if they play their cards right,” Munthali said.
The Malawi top-flight league comprises 16 teams and cellular company TNM are sponsors.
