Where’s the fighter and sulking Sanchez of Arsenal?

By Nelson Dafe on September 25, 2018

There are two South Americans I came to love for their on-field style of play in the English Premier League. They were both aggressive personalities who drove their teams with passion and played with gusto, leading sometimes, in matches, a one-man ‘gegenpress’ for their clubs much to the delight of their fans who,  like the typical English fan, enjoy that kind of all action play full of heart from their players.

The two players were strikers. I'm talking about ex-Manchester United and Argentina Ssar Carlos Tevez and current Manchester United player Alexis Sanchez (the Chilean).

While Tevez has since left the shores of England, Sanchez is still playing in the UK.

I loved Sanchez’s football qualities a lot but I later became pissed with his attitude while at Arsenal before he made the switch to Manchester United in January.

As he pushed for a move away from The Gunners, Sanchez became too big headed and was acting like a spoiler child. Of course he kept scoring for Arsenal until his departure and was arguably their best player,  but his attitude of berating his teammates for every misplaced pass or failure to effect a press with him, his clear display of anger to being substituted, even when he had scored goals in a game and other players needed to be given a fair chance to showcase themselves,  and his almost complete lack of sensitivity to the feelings of supporters when the Arsenal were trailing in games, by laughing and talking to teammates in the bench became the hallmark of his time at Arsenal and I was glad to see him sold to Manchester United instead of seeing Arsenal lose him for free had he stayed till the end of the season.

Since his move to Manchester United though, Sanchez has struggled badly and has failed to light up the atmosphere of Jose Mourinho’s team the way he did for Arsene Wenger at Arsenal.

He was supposed to be the player to help Man United reach new heights, but he has failed to genuinely sparkle and his goal scoring touch has deserted him rather dramatically and completely.

One thing that has gone also from him is his petulance and all the above mentioned misdemeanors at Arsenal.

In the presence of equally well-paid teammates and huge egos Sanchez has seemingly wilted from being the star attraction to a nobody.

Many United fans have been fed up by his unimpressive form after the club's last 1-1 home draw against newly promoted Wolverhampton Wanderers and have dubbed him a failure and a waste of money.

How the mighty falls!

Per the Mirror: “Sanchez was wholly ineffective throughout the 90 minutes, and was replaced by Juan Mata in the 63rd minute – 10 minutes after Joao Moutinho had equalised for the visitors.

“The Chilean has played 23 matches for United since signing from Arsenal in January, but has only scored three goals in that time and has none this season.

“Fans have also seen the development of young forwards Marcus Rashford and Anthony Martial stall in that time, with Martial even indicating that he’d like to leave the club in the summer.”

Where’s the animal Sanchez at Arsenal? I ask. Where’s that Sanchez that thinks he’s better than everyone else and wants to show the world that he is most pained by a loss, and that his teammates were not fighting as much as he did?

A number of explanations can be offered for why Sanchez is performing badly at Man United. We can point to a difference in tactics from that under which he flourished at Arsenal, we can point to the fact that he’s not the focal point of United’s attacking play, given the other great attacking talents in the team, etc but the whole situation of Sanchez’s shocking drop in form goes to remind us again to value the situation we are in when we are in a particular place where we are valued and not always think that the grass is greener at the other side.
