Pundits and fans wonder how Stoke City signed Etebo

Stoke City fans are delighting in the rave World Cup performances of new recruit

Karo Etebo while rival fans have questioned the Nigerian’s wisdom in joining the relegated Potters before the finals in Russia.

The young midfielder was dominant again for the Super Eagles as they beat Iceland 2-0 in Volgograd to give themselves an excellent chance of qualifying for the knockout stages of the tournament.

Etebo, who joined the Potters earlier this month from Portuguese outfit Feirense for a fee of £6.3m, was named in the FIFA team of the first round of matches, despite scoring an own goal in Nigeria’s opening 2-0 defeat to Croatia.

And the 22-year-old was at it again against the Icelanders, breaking up play and driving forward as Nigeria upset the odds to claim an impressive victory.

And while scores of Potters fans are savouring the prospect of seeing the youngster in a red and white shirt next season, just as many pundits and rivals fans cannot fathom how Stoke got the deal done before the World Cup started.

And with Argentina up next for Nigeria, another decent showing by Etebo will make that £6.3m fee look a relative snip.

He has previously been linked with top-flight clubs such as Leicester City and Newcastle United, but observers in Nigeria claim the youngster’s representatives believe he will be better off playing for a competitive team pushing for promotion from the Championship rather than one struggling near the wrong end of the Premier League.
