Echiejile-backed Pearlmag FC soldier on in Edo FA Cup

By Daily Sports on May 11, 2018

Pearlmag FC of Ikpoba Hill Benin City are steadily on the rise. The grassroots club came second in last year’s Edo State League, dishing out steely football laced with strong individual talents.

Now in the ongoing Edo Aiteo FA Cup, Pearlmag are marching on in some style as they have just qualified for the quarter final of the competition  by beating a strong Kings FC 2-1 in their round of 16 fixture decided at the Main bowl of the University of Benin sports complex on Thursday evening.

Pearlmag are being sponsored by Emma Echiejile who is the elder brother of Super Eagles star Elderson Echiejile and the team is said to be receiving a lot of financial backing from the assistant captain of the National team.

In their first game of the Aiteo Cup, Pearlmag stunned one of Nigeria’s most popular grassroots clubs and last year's Edo FA Cup semi-finalists BJ Foundation 3-2.

Pearlmag were trailing 0-2 in the first half but produced an attacking masterclass in the second half, scoring three goals in 15 minutes to turn their fortunes around and leave BJ Foundation licking their wounds.

In Thursday’s other game of the competition, Crescent FC beat Benin Celtics 2-1.

On Friday afternoon at the UNIBEN sports complex main bowl and practice pitch two matches in the round of 16 will be coming up.

Newcomers Rockster who earlier eliminated former Edo State League champions Benin Warriors in the first round will come up against Royal Springs FC.

There’s a big Derby match coming up between Yak Sports and Clibbers.

Both teams share the same Emotan secondary school training ground and have very good players in their folds.
