West Ham completed the ultimate smash and grab at Stamford Bridge to earn a draw against a dominant Chelsea side.
Antonio Conte’s side controlled the game and created a plethora of chances, notably through Willian, but their complacency in front of goal was duly punished. Substitute Javier Hernandez’s clinical 73rd minute equaliser was just his side’s fourth touch inside the Chelsea box.
The ever-reliable Cesar Azpilicueta had initially put the Blues ahead in the 36th minute, reacting fastest to Alvaro Morata’s nod-down and dedicating his goal to the late Ray Wilkins.
Marcos Alonso and Olivier Giroud both thought they’d won the game late on, only to be denied by two stunning saves by West Ham’s Joe Hart.
Any lingering hopes of a top four finish are extinguished for the home side, while David Moyes claims an invaluable point in the Irons' battle for Premier League survival.
Star man
After much criticism this season, Hart proved to be the difference between a draw and a defeat for his side at Stamford Bridge. Two world-class saves with the scores level will no-doubt send a message to the fans chanting ‘England’s number four’ at the Hammers keeper. The first came from an Alonso screamer which seemed destined for the top-left corner and then he required the entirety of his frame to tip Giroud’s header onto the post.
Moment of the match
Nobody saw West Ham’s equaliser coming. Credit must go to Marco Arnautovic, who was totally isolated for the whole game but came to life the moment he found space in the Chelsea box, picking out Chicharito who showed the front men in blue how to take a chance.
