Ibadan to host FASU Afro-Varsity 3×3 Basketball Challenge News

The Federation of African University Sports has confirmed that the eighth Afro-Varsity 3×3 Basketball Challenge will be held from May 28 to June 1, 2026, at the University of Ibadan, Nigeria.

The competition will draw top university teams from across Africa, with the 2026 edition marking a significant opportunity for Nigeria to host a major continental university basketball event.

The tournament will serve as a qualification pathway to the FISU 3×3 World Cup, with the top two teams in both the men’s and women’s categories earning the chance to represent Africa on the global stage.

According to a Nigeria University Games newsletter, participation is open to registered university students aged 17 to 25, competing on a university basis.

As part of the competition requirements, all players and teams must have verified accounts on the FIBA 3×3 platform to obtain official ranking points.

The accreditation portal opens on March 15, 2026, while institutions are expected to confirm participation by May 15, 2026.

With Nigeria set to host the event, it is expected to strengthen collaboration among African universities, provide valuable exposure for student-athletes, and further position university sports as a pathway to international competition.

The first-ever edition of the challenge was held in Uganda in 2015, featuring 17 teams from seven universities across nine countries, including hosts Uganda, South Africa, Rwanda, Kenya, Tanzania, Lesotho, Sudan, DR Congo, Zimbabwe and South Sudan. Uganda Christian University (women) and Ndejje University (men), both from Uganda, emerged as winners.

Uganda Christian University also won the women’s event last year, securing its third consecutive title.
