Southampton manager, Nathan Jones, has expressed delight in Nigerian striker Paul Onuachu after making his Premier League debut on Saturday against Brentford.
The 28-year-old Nigeria international completed a late transfer switch from KRC Genk to the St Mary Stadium on the last day of the January transfer window.
The deadline day transfer signing could not make any impact as Saints lost 3-0 to continue their poor run with eight losses in their last nine matches.
The Welsh tactician is however confident that the Nigerian striker alongside other new signings will add positively to the team.
“They’ve added to the squad, they added to the performance, they gave us a little bit more focal point, a bit more aggression, bit more front-footedness, and we were better in the second half,” Jones said in his post match, as quoted by Hamphirelive.
“But right at the end, one ball flipped in, you don’t mark it and they score. We put as many, if not more, balls into their box than they did to ours, but they put in the challenge, they were touch-tight and did the basics really well. That’s the disappointing thing as my teams are usually top of the tree in terms of basics.”
Saturday saw Southampton suffer their 14th Premier League defeat of the season and sit bottom of the table.
Since taking over at St Mary Stadium in November 2022, the 49-year-old tactician has only won one and lost six of his seven games in charge.
