Iwobi guns for 40th EPL start as Man City

By Daily Sports on March 1, 2018

Super Eagles forward Alex Iwobi is seeking his 40th premier league start for Arsenal on Thursday night when they host Manchester City four days after they were bashed 3-0 by Pep Guardiola’s side in Sunday’s Carabao Cup final at Wembley Stadium.

The Nigerian has played 56 times for Arsenal in the Premier League since he made his debut in the competition in October 2015, coming in as an 89th minute substitute for Mesut Ozil in the Gunners’ 3-0 away win at the Liberty Stadium against Swansea City.

Iwobi was used as a 73rd minute substitute for Aaron Ramsey in Sunday’s 3-0 capitulation to City and the Nigerian will want to make his 14th start in 18 Premier League games so far this season.

If he gets Arsene Wenger’s nod, it will also be Iwobi’s 40th start in 57 league games for Arsenal in three seasons. This season he has started in 14 out of 17 games; last season he made 18 starts in 26 games and in his first season he started eight out of the 13 games he featured in.

He will also be eager to not only make his fourth start in six games against City but also record his first win against the Citizens.

In the five games he has played against the table-topping City,Iwobi has lost thrice including the two so far this season and drawn two.

He was made to sit on the bench for 90 minutes last April when Arsenal defeated City 2-1 in the semi-finals of the FA Cup at Wembley.
