The high level of technical abilities of Spanish players has been talked about for years. The famous La Masia academy of Barcelona is, for example, one factory where the best of technically gifted player are to be seen being groomed.
New Cadiz of the Segunda Division in Spain signing and Nigeria international Saturday Erimuya has now witnessed firsthand the trapping, passing, shooting and dribbling qualities of young Spanish players since he moved to the club recently and he’s thrilled by what he’s seen.
Erimuya, who had a stint in Turkey with top flight club Kayserispor prior to featuring for Nigeria’s dream team in the Rio Olympics in 2016 where he picked a bronze medal, said playing in Spain “is different from Turkish football because (in Spain) it is all about young and talented players, unlike in Turkey were you find it difficult to play as a young player.”
“In Spain, the focus is more on technique. The players are individually at a much higher technical level than in any other place I have been,” Erimuya said.
Erimuya who played his grassroots football with BJ Foundation of Benin City, where they stunned many by reaching the quarter final of the Federations Cup in 2015, signed a five-year deal with Cadiz late last year.
The young star has only seen a few minutes of match action for his own new club since his move, as he continues to be integrated into the team.
That integration is going well so far for him under the guidance of Cadiz coach Mere, who’s teaching him the roles as he guns for more regular playing time.
“He’s a nice man. He loves so much to improve the technical side of a player’s game and I’m learning a lot from him,” Erimuya says of coach Mere.
