Former Chairman of Abiola Babes Football Club and Concord FC, Mohammed Moshood Edewor has signified interest to vie for the presidency of the football governing body in Nigeria, six months to the elective congress of the Nigeria Football Federation.
Edewor told journalists in Lagos that the need came for him to join the race because Nigeria football needs a lift that would attract the private sector.
The member of the Presidential Task Force for Nigeria’s first World Cup appearance in 1994 stated that he was particularly disturbed that the domestic league has remained stagnant due to bureaucratic bottlenecks.
“There’s a need for us to take a critical look into our football and the NFF needs to put a programme in place for the benefit of players. The Nigeria league has lost its followership because it no longer has attraction.
The league needs reorganization in four ties, a minimum wage for players and improvement of referees.”
For this dream to materialize, Edewor pointed out that government needs to hands off clubs for independent management.
“Football in Nigeria can run itself without government funding if the right steps are taken. A Club like TP Mazembe owns two aircrafts that readily come to their rescue when the need arises. Not a dime comes from government but they are one of the best teams on the African continent.” (The Sun)
