Meet Mother of FCT Sports, Chief (Mrs.) Dilichukwu Onyedinma

By Daily Sports on December 25, 2017

Chief (Mrs.) Dilichukwu Onyedinma is a popular person within sports circles in Nigeria and globally. She was an athlete in her active days in sports and has held many important positions including heading the Nigeria Women Football League and serving as Executive Committee member of the Nigeria Football Federation. Her suave is dripping. An intelligent administrator of great repute who has contributed immensely for the growth of sports men and women.

Foremost, she has lived all her life in sports as athlete and administrator and so it is safe to say that Onyedinma is a round peg in a round hole. That is why she is smoothly paddling the canoe of FCT Sports Council with ease. She has over the years developed a thick skin to absorb all kinds of shock and heat without hassles, a quality that has brought much respect, admirers and honour anywhere she goes.

She is a good listener and mother who believes in finding enduring solutions to problems rather than make excuses until they get out of hand. A workaholic of no little measure, she never relents until a set goal is achieved. She has set the tone in FCT sports, a target she is all out to achieve.

She is currently the Director of Sports at the Federal Capital Territory Sports Council. She is very unassuming and down to earth, which has endeared her to the low and mighty as she carries out her task of bringing FCT sports back to its glory.

She is a woman of few words but action packed. Being a former Hockey player, she believes in speed with accuracy and it has worked wonders for her bid to reposition FCT sports. Her watch-word is being proactive in all her assignments in order not to be caught unawares.  She is a great team player, pace setter and servant of the people. A kind hearted woman, Onyedinma has not left anyone in doubt in ensuring that everyone around her gets equal opportunity and treatment in all endeavours. That policy has endeared her further to the people. Little wonder therefore, sports in the FCT is growing steadily. And she believes that the cooperation of workers of the Council brought it to the level it is today even as more milestones are envisaged.

A woman with vision and mission, she has been unrelenting in reinventing sports in FCT and she carries everyone along and exploring every means legal to ensure that the welfare of athletes and workers of the FCT Sports Council are uppermost. Therefore, she sees FCT Sports Council workers as one big family and it has worked wonders in breeding industrial harmony, peace and wonderful output among workers and sundry.

She has received many recognitions and awards for her good works to humanity and sports development. She received one from the Oyo State Chapter of the Sports Writers Association of Nigeria (SWAN), which bestowed on her, the Women Sports Developer Award. Only recently, to be precise on Saturday, December 2, 2017 in Lagos, she was again recognised for her numerous selfless contributions to sports in the country and was awarded the prestigious Sports Administrator of the Year Award at the Nigerian Awards for Sporting Excellence organised by Daily Sports. The Awards Committee was headed by integrity personified Prince Isidore Oduah, a former Executive Committee member of the Nigeria Football Association, who refers to her as a reference point going by her antecedents.  She has made her mark and also paid her dues in this industry and nothing would be deemed too big to be extended to her for all her efforts and goodwill all these years.

Onyedinma dedicated the award to all women football stakeholders in the country, saying that their passion and interest have sustained the game in the country till date. She prays that their efforts would never be in vain.

It would be recalled that once upon a time the Board of the Federal Capital Territory Football Association (FCTFA) threw its support for the ambition of Onyedinma to re-contest for the position in the boards of the various league bodies in the country.

The Board arrived at this decision after properly reviewing the achievements of the Chairperson in last four years. “The Board of the FCTFA during its meeting took a critical look at the performance of the Nigeria Women Football League vis-a vis the Chairperson of the Board.

“We came to the resolution that she had performed excellently well, considering the achievements recorded by the various national women teams within the period under review. Not minding the harsh environment she found herself in the last dispensation in the Football Federation. It takes the doggedness of people with great passion, and determination to achieve the feat she recorded,” the Board observed.

It also affirmed that: “We have no option than to endorse her for the second term in office. We are very convinced that with the good working relationship she has with the present leadership of the Federation, that Nigeria Women Football would no doubt, maintain its leadership position in Africa, and compete favourably with others in Europe, America and Asia.”

Concluding, the Board said: “Election is an open event, where any qualified individual is free to participate; people should desist from casting aspersions on the achievements of others to achieve their aims. We at the FCT FA have resolved that we would not fold our arms and watch people drag the achievements of our sole representative in the Board of NFF to the dust, especially when such was achieved with sole efforts.”

It would be recalled that the FCT Chapter of SWAN last week, passed a vote of confidence on the Board of the Nigeria Women Football League led by Onyedinma, asking the League congressmen and women to return her to office.

Her achievements and wholehearted interest in her job are legion and have always earned her wide acceptance and sympathy especially when enemies of progress are at work. Her works speak volumes for her despite the ‘Bring Her Down’ syndrome. No doubt, they have tried and tried but have failed. As a wonderful sportswoman, she embraces all and always appeal that everybody should put hands together to achieve results for our fatherland and foremost, to encourage and mentor the youths that have taken sports as their career. She is no noise maker. And dear reader, after reading this unsolicited article on her which showcases her  rich and solid profile, you will not only be armed with first-hand information on this African woman but would also come to terms with why she has so far succeeded in holding firmly on despite hard tackles. It won’t be an overstatement to add that she knows her onions and has never left anybody in any doubt that where there is a will there is always a way.

Let’s shift further discussion on this interesting patriot further on Twitter, WhatsAPP, Linkedin and Facebook. Keep shooting hard, till next week!
