Senate Minority Leader, Chief Senator (Dr) Godswill Obot Akpabio (CON), and incumbent Governor or Borno State, Alhaji Kashim Shettima, have been scheduled to be honoured during the Nigerian Awards for Sporting Excellence (NASE) holding on Saturday, December 2, 2017 at Airport Hotel, Ikeja Lagos.
A statement issued in Lagos on Friday by the award organisers disclosed that Senator Akpabio would be honoured “for his monumental contributions to sports development during his years as Governor of Akwa Ibom State, which continue to eloquently proclaim him as a Visionary and an Uncommon Transformer. One of these immortal contributions was the building of the Godswill Akpabio International Stadium, Uyo, which today serves as Home Ground to the senior national football team, the Super Eagles.”
On Governor Shettima, the statement signed by the Chairman of the Award Committee, Prince Isidore Oduah, said he would be honoured “for going the extra mile to provide good leadership in Borno State in the face of monumental challenges, more so for his continued support for, and promotion of sports from the inception of his Administration till date.”
The organisers had earlier in the week announced the nomination of seven outstanding sportsmen and women for the awards designed to reward Nigerian sportsmen, women and administrators who excel in any given year, as well as corporate bodies contributing significantly to the development and growth of Nigerian sports. The nominees include Super Eagles Skipper Mikel Obi; mesmerising winger Victor Moses; veteran striker Obafemi Martins; safe hands Carl Ikeme and Ikechukwu Ezenwa; goal queen Asisat Oshoala; and tennis sensation Aruna Quadri.
“Other nominees for the maiden awards, as well as some of the dignitaries expected to grace the award ceremony on December 2 would be unveiled in due course,” Prince Oduah stated.
