Niger Tornadoes head coach Abubakar Bala believes the annual pre-season championship, the Gold Cup, will greatly help participating teams to test their new signings for the upcoming league season.
The championship will start on Wednesday with ten teams present to vie for the coveted trophy.
Participating teams are title holders Lobi Stars, runners-up Mountain of Fire Miracles Ministries (MFM) FC, Niger Tornadoes, Rivers United, Katsina United, Kano Pillars, newly promoted side Kwara United, FC Ebedei and two demoted sides Remo Stars and Abubakar Bukola Saraki (ABS) FC.
Bala said his side are ready to kick off their title chase on a winning note against MFM FC. The match will be held at the Kwara State Stadium in llorin.
“Everybody is certainly going to test their new signings at the Gold Cup championship and the outcome will show the path the upcoming league season will follow.
“It will further test the strength of the participating teams to excel in the coming season.
“We are starting the campaign against familiar opponents.
“In the last championship the sides shared the spoils 1-1 and went ahead to cancel each other out in the league with MFM winning 3-0 in Lagos while Tornadoes responded likewise in Lokoja.
“The clash is certainly going to be tough for both sides and we expect MFM FC to come into the game with a lot of caution,” Bala said. © supersport.com
