The Professional Golfers’ Association of Nigeria has announced the death of Jamiu Oyebajo, one of the first four Nigerians to take up professional golf as a career in 1969.

He died in the late Tuesday night (November 7, 2017) at the Lagos State Teaching Hospital (LASUTH) in Ikeja, Lagos.

Present Director of the body, Samson Lawal, said his death was a big shock to the body as Jamiu played the role of a stabiliser so many times in the association, and a go-to person whenever the body needed direction.

“Jamiu had a strong character and lived his life for golf. His passion and strong leadership qualities was readily available for the association and individual members, and he is perhaps the most respected member; we will miss him,” he said.

Oyebajo a former caddie in the 1960s, was one of the first four players that formed the PGA of Nigeria in 1969, the others are Emmanuel Lawrence (late), Festus Makelemi and Patrick Okpomu.

He captained West African team against Great Britain in the 1970s and was caretaker Chairman of the association apart from his terms as the Director of the body.

He has trained and mentored several golfers and professional golfers across the country.

He was laid to rest at his residence in Ikorodu Lagos State on Wednesday, November 8, 2017.
