The Teslim Balogun Stadium in Lagos would be considered to stage this year’s Aiteo Cup final on October 8 and not thewa United qualify for the cup competition decider, according to SCORENigeria.
The final match of the cup competition has been slated for October 8, 24 hours after the crucial Russia 2018 FIFA World Cup group qualifier between group leaders Nigeria and Chipolopolo of Zambia at the Godswill Akpabio Stadium in Uyo, otherwise referred to as ‘Nest of Champions’.
“Uyo had been selected as host city for the Federation Cup final on October 8,” a top official told SCORENigeria
“The idea was that, for logistic reasons, it will make sense playing the final match just a day after the World Cup qualifier between Nigeria and Zambia at the same venue.”
But he also hinted that the arrangement could be altered the way things are going.
“Yes, there could be a reversal of the arrangement,” he explained.
“For instance, if Akwa United reached the final, it would not make for a level playing field hosting the final match in Uyo which is their home ground.
“It certainly will give them undue advantage and we don’t want to be seen as being biased.”
He went on to reveal that the NFF are therefore considering an alternative venue well in advance on event their worst fears happened.
We don’t want to shift the match date,” he said.
“Instead, we can afford to shift the venue and in this context, we are already looking at the possibility of taking the game to Lagos, if Akwa United qualified for the final”.
Akwa United, otherwise known as ‘The Promise Keepers’, thrashed Katsina United Feeders 7-0 in the quarter final first leg decided Sunday in Uyo.
The reverse fixture comes up in Katsina on Wednesday.
The winners will travel to Ijebu-ode for the semi-final first leg clash against Sunshine Stars.
In the other semi-final, holders FC Ifeanyiubah will travel to Confluence Stadium in Lokoja for a first leg date with Niger Tornadoes.
