Rivers United push Gombe Utd to relegation

By Daily Sports on September 5, 2017

Gombe United joined Remo Stars to become the second club to be relegated from this season's Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL) on Sunday after a 0-3 defeat at Rivers United.

The Savannah Scorpions did put up a decent battle in the first half before conceding from two spot kicks converted by Bernard Ovoke on 50 and 72 minutes.

Bolaji Sakin came off the bench to put icing on Rivers United's performance with the third on the stroke of full time.

At the top of the table, Plateau United failed to take three points at struggling Wikki Tourists as Chinedu Onyelonu converted one of 13 penalties awarded in Sunday's 10 matches in the Nigerian top division. Onyelonu's goal from the spot was enough to see Wikki end the game 1-0 and give themselves a lifeline to escape the drop with one matchday to go.

League leaders Plateau United will now turn their attention to their final day game against outgoing champions Enugu Rangers who they play hosts to at the Rwang Pam Stadium in Jos. © supersport.com
