Andre Ayew targets third World Cup

By Daily Sports on August 31, 2017

Ghana attacker Andre Ayew has expressed his desire to play at third World Cup when the Russia 2018 finals are held next year.

Ayew was part of Ghana’s squads at the 2010 and 2014 tournaments in South Africa and Brazil respectively.

However, the Black Stars’ hopes of reaching Russia 2018 are looking pretty slim: they trail Group E leaders Egypt by five points.

The West African heavyweights need to defeat Congo in impending back-to-back clashes in Kumasi and Brazzaville, and hope that the Pharaohs drop points in their matches against Uganda.

It may seem a tall order, even for a side of the Black Stars’ pedigree, but Ayew believes that qualification is still a realistic achievement.

“I’ve been to two [World Cups] but we’re in a difficult spot at the moment,” Ayew is quoted by GHANASoccernet.

“We’re in a difficult spot, but hopefully we’re going to make it to the World Cup.“

It’s an important year for us and if we do it, we’ll turn something that was impossible into something possible, so our country would be on fire.

“We’re going to try to make it happen. We have the belief, we have a great squad and I think we can do it.“

I’d like to go to my third World Cup. It’s not every player who has the chance to go to have even one World Cup, so if I have the opportunity to go to a third one, I need to do everything possible to make that happen.

”Ghana’s first clash against Congo in Kumasi on Friday evening kicks off at 17h30 CAT.
