As part of a developmental programme to train young grassroots players for the future, a select Nigeria side of under-15 players are presently in Morocco for two friendly matches with Morocco’s under-15 side.
The Nigerian under 15 team, which is technically not the national team as they do not participate in any FIFA, CAF and WAFU competitions, is a grassroots project drawn up to discover talents for future use in the main national teams.
The Nigerian team on Tuesday lost 0-1 to their Moroccan counterparts in Rabat. The game was a highly entertaining one in which the kids of both sides showed lots of flashes of brilliance suggesting a bright future for their careers.
The second game comes up on Thursday in the same city after which the Nigerian lads will head home immediately.
The games are part of a recent agreement between the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) and the Federation Royal Marocaine de Football within the framework of youth development.
The Nigerian under-15 team players were selected from the NFF/Zenith Bank Future Super Eagles U13/15 tournament played last year. Each state participated at zonal levels to pick zonal teams that later participated at regional levels. The team is coached by Jolomi Atune.
Meanwhile one of the regional coaches of the team and fitness trainer with the Nigerian under-23 football team to last year’s Rio Olympics in Brazil, Nnamdi Onuigbo, is elated with the progress of the player. Prior to their departure for Morocco he said: “God has used me as an instrument to change lives. By God’s grace all four boys From Edo State whom I, in partnership with my friend Stanley Seyi, oversaw through a series of scouting events will travel tomorrow with the Nigeria U15 to Morroco. What started like a dream with lots of challenges and evil people fighting to destroy it has now become a glorious reality for these kids to dawn their national team colours at this tender age.”
One of the outstanding players of the team is 13 year old Kelvin Agho. The Ine Stars of Benin City youngster is an outstanding left back whose style of play is drawing comparisons with some of the best left backs in the world like Real Madrid's Marcello. The young lad’s movement, ball control and vision simply belie his young age. Just like the rest of the squad, there are high hopes that this set of boys will go on to achieve great things for their football careers and for the national teams of Nigeria.
