Light Heavyweight contender Marcus Browne (20-0, 14 KOs) stopped local crowd favorite and previously unbeaten Seanie Monaghan (28-1, 17 KOs) with a second round TKO victory on the undercard of the Omar Figueroa-Robert Guerrero bout at Long Island, New York’s Nassau Coliseum.
Browne jumped on Monaghan early scoring a knockdown in the opening round with a straight left hand. Monaghan, clearly shocked, managed to get up but was quickly hit again by the Staten Island-native Browne.
Browne landed a punch low causing Monaghan to kneel over in pain. Referee Steve Willis gave Monaghan time to recover which ultimately allowed the Irish fighter to survive the round. In the second round Browne landed big shots hurting the crowd favorite Monaghan again causing him to crash into ropes.
After Browne landed an unanswered combination Willis jumped in to stop the bout. Monaghan, always a huge ticket seller in the New York area, still had the crowd chanting his name even in defeat.
Monaghan is from Long Beach, NY which is 15 minutes from the arena. According to Compubox Browne landed 32/80 total punches to Monaghan’s 9 out 47. Browne also landed 52% of his power shots in the two rounds against the overmatched Monaghan.
For the 2012 United States Olympian Browne this is his second big knockout win of 2017 having stopped Thomas Williams, Jr this past February in Ohio. Browne will look for a world title shot now in a wide-open light heavyweight division.
