An air of unease has enveloped the camp of Rivers United over rumoured pay slash.
A report by SCORENigeria stated that that Rivers United players are poised for a showdown with the management over what they described as “rumours” to slash their travel allowance for a final CAF Confederation Cup clash at FUS Rabat of Morocco.
After their disappointing 2-0 loss to Club Africain of Tunisia in Sunday’s matchday 5 fixture at Yakubu Gowon Stadium, Port Harcourt, which has delivered a massive body blow to their chances of going past the group stage of the continental competition, ‘The Pride of Rivers’ are billed to confront FUS Rabat on Friday in Morocco.
But reports from United’s camp, Elekahia, on Monday indicated that the players are angry with what they described as plans by the management to cut their estacodes for the trip to Morocco.
The players, who spoke on condition of anonymity for fear of victimisation, claimed it will be insensitive on the part of the management to tamper with their entitlement, claiming that such move could be counter-productive.
“We are just hearing it as rumour so let’s believe it is rumour”, one of the players, a defender told SCORENigeria
“It is true that we lost yesterday (Sunday) to Club Africain, but it would amount to adding salt to a bleeding injury if the management goes ahead to cut our estacode.
“It would demoralise us the more rather than motivate us”, he stressed.
Another player pointed out that they have not been paid two months’ salaries and some outstanding match bonuses and wondered why estacode slash is being contemplated.
“We won’t just say anything until they confirm our worse fears by telling us they were going to reduce our estacodes.
“If it is true, based on what we are hearing, it is insensitive and misguided aggression that will pay no dividend and we will resist it firmly”, the player fumed.
Rivers United are scheduled to travel out to Morocco on Wednesday morning aboard Air Maroc.
